TEACHING

My teaching approach centers interactive learning and the integration of classroom knowledge with everyday experiences in the world.

I believe strongly in the power of sociology to advance understanding of the connections between society and the environment and to address social and environmental inequalities so that everyone, everywhere, has an opportunity to live a full and thriving life.

Whether we want to know more about what drives climate change denial, why someone's zip code is a good predictor of their life expectancy, how we can better prepare for and equitably respond to fires, floods, and hurricanes, or to more fully grasp the depth and persistence inequality in society, sociology can provide the tools to help us understand and address these concerns.

I aim for students to leave the classroom with an expanded worldview, and with the skills and confidence to be more curious, compassionate, and empowered within and beyond the university.

For more insights into how sociology can help us to understand social inequalities and investigate the links between environment and society, see two American Sociological Association videos below that I use in the classroom.
